Five Ways to Enjoy the Lake Area While Social Distancing

While this spring took an unexpected turn, there are still many ways to make the best of it! For many families, you may have an altered work schedule, and your kiddos may be home from school, but this can be a fun time to try out new things at the Lake of the Ozarks! At this point, the Lake area is still focused on social distancing, and it’s 100% a good idea to find ways to get outside for fresh air and vitamin D! Here are a few FUN ways to enjoy the Fun Lake even while practicing good social distancing habits.

Keep In Mind …

It’s important to always follow the rules, and check to make sure that they haven’t changed. You can visit the Camden County Health Department's website to get updated information. At this time of this blog, it’s still acceptable to visit the grocery stores, gas stations, parks, and banks so long as necessary precautions are taken and maintained. You can also continue to utilize restaurants as long as the use of drive-thru, pickup, or delivery options is available and allowed. Make sure that you are practicing safe distance when you leave your home, keep hand sanitizer with you, and if you are feeling ill, stay home.

#1. Take a Ride on the Boat

If you have a boat, now is a great time to get it un-winterized and take it out on the water! The days have been beautiful, so grab the boat and hit the water! If you haven’t tried the Aquatic Trail which is administered by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, this could be a great opportunity! It is a nine-mile, two-hour boating excursion that runs from Public Beach #1 northwest to Grand Glaize Beach. You can visit FunLake.com/aquatic-trail to learn more.

#2. Hike a Trail

This is a great time to get out and enjoy nature by hiking a trail. You can make it educational for the kids by observing the plants and wildlife that are native to the Lake of the Ozarks, or even consider it a PE lesson! At this time, the State Parks are still open (with exceptions), so you can get out with your immediate family and get some fresh air, enjoy nature, and get some exercise.

#3. Try Out Geocaching

Have you ever tried geocaching? This is a fun activity that has been enjoyed by many, and the Lake is a hot spot for it! All you need is a GPS and a list of coordinates. The goal is to learn more about your area and find fun locations by following the coordinates given to you. When you arrive at the destination, there is a cache (box) that has items in it. The only real rules are that if you take something from the box, you must replace it with an item of equal or greater value. If you decide not to take or leave and item from the cache, that’s fine, too! Sometimes it’s just fun to go find it and many are placed in fun locations where you can enjoy the view or the surroundings! Who knows, you may find a new favorite spot at the Lake!

#4. Clean & Test Your Fishing Gear

As the weather is getting warmer, it’s a great time to get your fishing tackle out, make sure it’s cleaned, and ready for your next outing! In fact, as of March 27th, the Missouri Department of Conversation and the Missouri Conservation Commission announced that they are temporarily waiving permit requirements for sport fishing and daily trout tags for Missouri residents and nonresidents whose fishing privileges are not otherwise suspended. This is supposed to go until April 15th, which means that now is a great time to get out and enjoy the sport!

#5. Have a Picnic

If you still want to support local businesses who are going to be struggling over the next few weeks, you can still get pick-up and take-out from many! Plan a fun picnic with your family, stop by and safely grab your favorite Lake of the Ozarks food, and enjoy a fun picnic. You can do a picnic in your yard or you can visit a beautiful outdoor location at one of the State Parks.

In This Together

Before you know it, Summer will be here and hopefully, things will be getting back to normal. Keep in mind that right now, Bridal Cave is closed, and Big Surf and the Ozarks Amphitheater are still closed for the season. Before making any immediate plans to do anything, please check all local guidelines as well as business operating hours, as these are changing daily.

We can’t wait for summer to be here, for families to be gathering at the Lake for fun family vacations, and for this virus to be a thing of the past. But until then, we hope that you can make the most of it, enjoy your time with your family, and even get to know a few areas of the Lake that you may not have visited yet!
